In recent weeks, the topic of the reform of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) has become the subject of a lively debate. The changes proposed by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education have caused serious controversies in academia. We highly recommend reading the article “Ostry bój o Przyszłość Polskiej Akademii Nauk” [ENG: “A fierce fight for the future of the Polish Academy of Sciences”], published in Dziennik Gazeta Prawna, to which the Managing Partner of Jabłoński Koźmiński & Partners, Dr hab. Krzysztof Koźmiński, prof. UW provided commentary.

A Hungarian scenario in Poland? PAS facing possible loss of autonomy

The main point at issue is the accusation that the reform is heading towards centralization, which could threaten the independence of the institution. The Ministry claims that the amendment aims to “restore democratic standards,” but the Polish Academy of Sciences fears a repetition of the “Hungarian scenario,” which would deprive the Academy of autonomy.

Expert warns: Reform of the Polish Academy of Sciences in its current form raises serious doubts

Our expert, Dr Hab. Krzysztof Koźmiński, prof. UW— Managing Partner of Jabłoński Koźmiński & Partners, in his commentary on the reform of the Polish Academy of Sciences, emphasizes that although the reform of the Polish Academy of Sciences is necessary, the proposed change raises serious concerns.

He also emphasizes that scientific institutions such as the Polish Academy of Sciences should maintain self-government and autonomy and that the changes proposed by the government may lead to staff replacement and subordination of the Academy to central authorities, which would be detrimental to the development of Polish science.

The commentary by Dr hab. Krzysztof Koźmiński, prof. UW is a reflection of broad concerns in the scientific community related to the risk of excessive centralization and loss of independence of this key institution
